Edifício do Castelo

Vila do Conde, Portugal
Project Description

Edifício do Castelo

The multi-family housing complex with 29 apartments is located in a residential area close to River Ave and the Atlantic Ocean, in the center of the new, rapidly growing district of Vila do Conde, in northern Portugal.

It is formally divided into two sections, with a general basement accommodating both commercial and residential spaces. The proximity to the ocean required the use of materials that are both low-maintenance and highly resistant. We chose Portuguese white marble (Estremoz) and black panels. The color scheme emphasizes neutral tones.

On the façades, we created asymmetrical rhythms with the windows in a formal arrangement and horizontally cut balconies. This rhythm is interrupted by a large vertical black band, which is the protrusion of the technical areas of the apartments.

On the upper floor, the façade is covered with a black lacquered panel. Given the promoter’s preference for conservative design, we created a subtle yet impactful building, with a strong commercial presence. The building’s main entrance faces north, while the south façade is internalized and directed toward the courtyard. In this one, we adopted a different rhythmic pattern,  with a graphic design of windows and balconies arranged randomly, creating a continuation of the main façade. On this elevation, the balconies correspond to a single interior compartment. The use of photovoltaic panels reduces the building’s environmental impact, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.
