Originally built in 1879, the historic Creche de Cedofeita, located on Rua de Aníbal Cunha in the parish of Cedofeita, Porto, is set to begin a new chapter. The Cedofeita Coworking project proposes the adaptive reuse of the historic building, converted into a vibrant coworking space designed to host small businesses, freelancers, and creative professionals.
The project preserves and restores the building’s original structure, including its elegant staircase, the central skylight, the intricate woodwork, and the robust granite façade. Interior interventions will focus on reconfiguring select walls to create larger, more open-plan spaces while maintaining the building’s historical integrity.
The new internal layout is organized around a rhythm of open-plan coworking areas and smaller, enclosed private offices. These varied spatial typologies cater to different scales of work — from individual tasks to group collaboration — and diverse professional profiles. Complementing the working areas, a coffee shop and bar will be integrated into the project, serving not only as a social space for coworkers but also as a welcoming venue for the broader community.
The material palette will celebrate the juxtaposition between old and new. The original granite walls, timber elements, and plaster details will be preserved where possible, repaired where necessary, and contrasted with contemporary interventions that adopt simple, honest materials such as steel, glass, and wood. Externally, the intervention is intentionally minimal. The only significant addition is a lightweight, arched red metal canopy that frames the main entrance. Sculptural yet functional, this new element signals the building’s new identity and purpose without competing with its historic presence.
The restored façade will retain its original character, preserving the dialogue between the building and its street, while subtly introducing new life and activity. In reactivating this important building, the project contributes not only to the preservation of Porto’s architectural heritage but also to the dynamic evolution of its urban life, creating new opportunities for work, creativity, and community in the heart of Cedofeita.
