Project Description

Palmeira

The Rua da Palmeira project is the renovation and expansion of a group of three houses within the consolidated urban fabric of Aveiro’s city center. This proposal increases the number of dwellings from three to six, carefully integrating the new additions into the existing architectural context. Of the six residences, only one will have direct access from the public road, maintaining the architectural continuity of the ground-floor construction. This exception will be subtly distinguished by a wooden entrance door. The remaining five dwellings will be accessed through a setback entrance, creating a transition space between the public road and the residences. On the ground floor, there are three units: two facing the street and one receiving natural light from an interior courtyard. The first floor also contains three units, all accessed via a shared stairwell and aligned at the same threshold level. Although the project adopts a contemporary approach and forms a single building, the chosen design solutions ensure that it maintains the visual perception of a group of smaller houses, consistent with the existing urban morphology along the waterfront. The fenestration pattern provides a sense of architectural unity, reinforcing the integration of the new structure into its surroundings. The foundation of the new elements will be constructed in white marble, extending to the two small planters positioned at the ground-floor openings, adding texture and continuity to the façade.
