The design of this house responds to the landscape, situated on a steep natural slope at one of the highest points in the city of Póvoa de Varzim. We took advantage of the existing topography by creating a flat platform in exposed concrete, which is integrated into the single-family residential building. A black volume was placed atop this platform to fulfill the program’s requirements as specified by the clients. This design allows the lower part of the building to dissolve into the topography, creating a sense of continuity between the grassed landscape and the built form.
The upper floor houses the social spaces, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, service toilet, and office, while the lower floor, constructed in exposed concrete, is dedicated to the private sleeping areas with bathrooms and circulation. The garage is carved from the concrete, open to the exterior, and provides an alternative access to the house. The design emphasizes spaces that encourage social interaction and optimize sea views, which were key considerations in defining the interior layout. Open spaces and large spans were prioritized. For outdoor circulation, we used prefabricated concrete slabs, while other areas were grassed.
